The issue of child sexual abuse (CSA) is a topic that is still taboo in India. A large segment of the populace considers CSA to be a predominantly western problem. Many even consider it to be an issue affecting only the lower economic strata of the society. But according to a 2007 study by the Indian government's Ministry of Women and Child Development and Unicef, the ground realities are quite different. Across the country, every second child is being subjected to one or more forms of sexual abuse and every fifth child faces severe sexual abuse. Sexual violence against children is commonly perpetrated by someone known to the child. Most Children do not report the matter to anyone. Very often children do not even realize that they are being abused. A conspiracy of silence prevails around the issue which tacitly encourages abuse.
